My Better Tootsie Roll Recipe
Prep Time: 30m
Yield: Between 40 & 50 depending on the length and thickness
Time: Set at room temperature 1 hr
Ingredients:
- 6 ounces of finely chopped milk chocolate (I used Cadbury) bars (or 1 cup of chips)
- 6 ounces of finely chopped dark chocolate (I used 90% Cocoa) bars (or 1 cup of chips)
- 2/3 cup of sifted confectioners powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup of light corn syrup
- 1/8 tsp. pure vanilla and only 3 drops of optional orange extract (this gives the original flavor)

Directions:
- In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the milk chocolate and dark chocolate on medium-high power for 30-second bursts of power, stirring after each interval, until 75% of the chocolate is melted. Then stir vigorously until all the chocolate has melted. Alternatively, melt the chocolate in a double boiler on the stove. (I’m old school and used a double boiler on the stove)
- Sift the powdered sugar into the bowl of chocolate and stir until all the sugar has dissolved.
- Continue stirring until the chocolate cools enough to feel slightly cool to the touch.
- Add the light corn syrup and orange extract, and stir until just combined. Do not over-mix.
- Place the mixture in a zip-top bag and flatten it to about 1/2-inch thickness. Set it aside at room temperature for one hour.
- Remove the mixture from the bag and knead it until smooth.
- Break off pieces and roll them into 1/4-inch thick ropes.
- Cut the ropes into 3-inch long pieces.
- Wrap the pieces in wax paper, if desired.
- Store in an airtight container for several months or until they become too hard to chew.
Enjoy!
