This Mango Lip Balm Recipe may surprise you. Mangoes are a delicious fruit, but their large seed often takes up most of the space inside. Ever wonder what can be done with those huge mango seeds? Surprisingly, that’s exactly where mango butter comes from! It’s made by cold-pressing or expelling the seeds of the mango fruit.
Store-bought lip balms often contain a range of chemicals, including parabens, artificial fragrances, and alcohol. Since we inevitably ingest some of the products we apply to our lips, it’s important to be aware of the ingredients—or better yet, make your own lip balm.
If you’re familiar with DIY skincare, you’ll find that making lip balm is just as simple as other homemade skincare recipes.
Mango butter lip balm can be stored in any container you have available, such as small jars or repurposed ChapStick tubes.
Homemade lip balm also makes a thoughtful and personal gift!
Many DIY skincare recipes commonly use shea butter. While I love its benefits, shea butter has a distinct scent that can require a lot of essential oils to mask. That’s where mango butter shines! Unlike shea butter, mango butter has little to no scent, making it an ideal ingredient for skincare creations in our home. It’s quickly becoming a favorite!
If you’re making homemade lip balm and don’t have mango butter on hand, you can easily substitute it with shea butter in the same quantity. The rest of the process remains unchanged.
Mango Lip Balm Recipe
Here is what you will need to get started:
- Medium sized sauce pan (to make a double boiler)
- Glass bowl
- Spatula
- Measuring Cups
- Essential Oils
- Container to put lip balm in
- Jojoba Oil (1 tsp)
- Coconut Oil (2 tsp)
- Mango Butter (2 tsp)
- Beeswax (2 tsp)
INGREDIENTS
- 2 tsp Mango Butter
- 2 tsp Coconut Oil
- 2 tsp Beeswax
- 1 tsp Jojoba Oil
- 10 drops Essential Oils (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
To start, create a double boiler by placing a saucepan filled with water on the stove, then set a heat-safe bowl on top. Bring the water to a boil.
Add all the ingredients to the bowl, stirring occasionally. Keep in mind that beeswax takes the longest to melt, so allow about 15 to 20 minutes for everything to fully combine.
Once melted, the mixture will have an amber color. At this point, add your favorite essential oils. For the recipe shown, I used around 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil.
If you’re using glass containers for your lip balm, carefully pour the hot mixture directly into them. For plastic containers, let the mixture cool for 2-3 minutes before pouring it in.
After filling the containers, let the lip balm solidify in the fridge for about an hour before using it!
