Apple Crips Recipe Oatmeal Crumble

I was raised on a farm in Northwest Pennsylvania. If my mother was looking for me, she would typically find me in my favorite tree in the pasture, and within perfect view from the kitchen window. There were three, 2 apple trees and 1 pear tree. I knew that someone must have planted them long ago because they were perfectly spaced. The branches had room to grow and not touch the tree next to it. This was also the favorite place for the horses to hang out, for 2 reasons. One being that horses love apples, and two because they provided the only shade to keep them cool on hot summer days.

The apple tree variety was Northern Spy and I bet most people don’t know this variety, because they are not readily available. They are even hard to find at an apple farm. It’s an older variety and my absolute FAVORITE!!! I swear to you that the apples on one of the trees were the size of large grapefruits! One apple would surely fill your belly, and it did indeed.

I tell you this story because I feel that this is the very BEST apple variety for Apple Crisp or any apple dish.

Here is what you will need for Legendary Apple Crisp Recipe Crumble

SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS

APPLE VARIETY: I believe that the Northern Spy variety of apple is the very best for Apple Crisp, but they are an older variety and usually only found at an apple farm. So, most find that Granny Smiths are the next best thing. You can also use Gala, Honeycrisp, or any apple that is on the tart side. Go ahead and mix it up with different varieties if you like.

LIGHT BROWN SUGAR: If you don’t have this, you could just use regular white sugar.

OLD-FASHIONED OATS: These are also known as rolled oats. It’s fine to use quick-cooking oats instead if that’s what you have in the cupboard.

BUTTER: To make this recipe suitable for vegans, you could switch the butter to dairy-free option.

I hope you are able to find the Northern Spy apple variety and see for yourself what a great tasting apple this is. If by chance you do, make sure to save the seeds and plant your own trees for the next generation to enjoy. Bon Appetit!
