Where Did the Best Bloody Mary Recipe Originate?

I am a curious person and like to do research to know how things are made and created. So, of course I wanted to know how this tasty morning drink was created and who actually thought of it.

From what I understand and have read, in 1921 a French bartender named Fernand Petiot has claimed the invention of the FIRST best Bloody Mary. This was according to his granddaughter and well before any claims that followed. Furthermore, Fernand was in Paris working at a bar called The New York Bar, later to become Harry’s New York Bar. This was a famous hangout of American migrants, including Ernest Hemingway. According to the tradition of this bar, the original Bloody Mary was created “on the fly” that only had tomato juice and vodka.

There are many historical figures associated with the name “Bloody Mary”, including Queen Mary I of England. While, attempting to re-establish the Catholic Church in England, she was nicknamed “Bloody Mary”.

Some believe that the Hollywood movie star Mary Pickford was the inspiration. Yet, others think it came from a waitress named Mary who worked at a bar in Chicago called the Bucket of Blood. Now, according the the Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, one of the patrons said that the cocktail looked like his girlfriend named Mary, who worked at the Bucket of Blood. So, he agreed to call this drink the Bloody Mary. Coincidentally, this patron that the drink was first made for was non other than Vladimir Smirnov, from the Smirnoff vodka family. Believe it, or not!
