When changing a diaper, use the front part of the diaper to help wipe your baby. Wipe from front to back ALWAYS, to prevent a urinary tract infection. You might as well start early in her life, because this infection is VERY common and can be prevented if taught properly from the beginning. Then use a mild wipe or wet washcloth to clean the bottom, again wiping from front to back. Use cotton balls or squares and warm water for a newborn or a baby with diaper rash, then pat dry . You could put disposables in a plastic bag or zipper-top bag before you put it in the pail to cut down on the smell.
